Mathematics and the Arts at Bridges Galway 2026

The Maths Week Ireland team was delighted to attend the Bridges Conference at University of Galway over the weekend. Hundreds of people from all over the world attended, and we showed them Mary Boole’s Curve Stitching activity that uses straight lines to create the illusion of curves.

Mary Boole (1832 – 1916) used this technique to make abstract mathematical concepts more tangible and engaging, particularly for educational purposes. By turning mathematical ideas into hands-on activities, she showed how beautiful and creative mathematics can be, making it accessible and enjoyable for learners of all ages.

There were many great presentations and displays of mathematical arts at the conference. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and spoke with us about maths, art, and the success of Maths Week Ireland.
