August Bank Holiday means Ireland’s biggest street theatre festival SPROAI comes to the streets of Waterford.
Calmast has been part of it since 2010 and will take over Cathedral Square with demos, puzzles and games for all. The ever popular Physics Buskers and Bubbly Maths will be joining the line up
Robert Boyle Summer School
The 11th Robert Boyle Summer School took place in Waterford and Lismore 22-25 June 2023.
A great line of of speakers addressed the theme Science Writing | Writing Science
Other events included
- “Boyle in Points” a novel game show hosted by RTE’s Cathal Murray
- Garden Party at Lismore Castle with Tapas made from locally sources food and Gin cocktails sponsored by Blackwater Distillery.

The Robert Boyle Summer School celebrates one of the most influential founders of experimental science, Robert Boyle (1627-1691). Since 2012 we have organised the annual Robert Summer School in Waterford celebrating his life and legacy and considering the place of science and technology in our society and culture. The festival is run by South East Technological University. The Idea of the South East Engineering Festival is that people in the South East of Ireland can learn what engineers do. There are lots of great jobs in engineering in the region and you can learn to be an engineer at South East technological university. Visit EngFest

Maths Week Ireland is an all-island initiative and a partnership of institutions and groups promoting positive attitudes towards maths and highlighting the importance of maths in our lives since 2006. It is one of four national STEM festivals. Maths Week is a collaborative partnership of organisations including all the universities, institutes of technology, with professional bodies, visitor centres and more; Maths Week engaged directly with over 400,000 people in 2020, making it the world’s largest maths festival. Kilkenny Science Festival will take place from 12th – 20th November 2022. Coordinated by Calmast STEM Engagement Centre at South East Technological University in partnership with schools, industry, Kilkenny County Council and other groups. It is sponsored by SFI as one of the regional science festivals for Science Week 2022. Visit STEMKilkenny
The South-East Science Festival is the regional celebration of national Science Week serving counties Waterford, South Tipperary and Carlow. In 2021, more than 12,000 participated in events ranging from workshops, talks and shows at SETU, at schools, at libraries and at theatres to adult-only events in pubs. Each year, the festival brings top scientists and science presenters from Ireland and abroad to the counties of the South-East. For programme follow menu on top of page.
WexSci, Wexford Science Festival aims to reach communities at a local and regional level. It is coordinated by Calmast, the South East region’s STEM Hub based at South East Technological University, in partnership with Wexford County Council Library Service and Community Development Department, Waterford Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB), Johnstown Castle, the Environmental Protection Agency, JFK Arboretum, Wexford Science Café and local industry.
Calmast’s mission is to drive awareness of STEM and STEM careers to all. Established in 2003 to promote STEM to schools and the wider community Calmast now engages with an annual audience of about 30,000 in counties Waterford, Wexford, Kilkenny and Tipperary. Calmast’s STEM engagement is organised in two main strands: Festivals & Events and Sustained Engagement.
